WHAT IS DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING?

As a developmental editor, my first step is to understand your vision for your project: everything flows from there. I listen carefully to you so that I can work to ensure that your reader will hear you as clearly as I do. I support you as an author, then, in advocating for the reader you want to reach.

I pay attention to big-picture issues related to argument, organization, analysis & development, audience, and style. My vision is panoramic, but my feedback is detailed, providing you with both a manuscript assessment and a revision plan tailored to your vision that is supportive and actionable.

Developmental editing is different from copy editing, which checks for basic mechanical issues, such as grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Developmental editing also differs from line editing, which aims to clarify and enliven the content of the text through attention to the style of the writing.

While my primary interest is in developmental editing, I can provide these additional editing services after large-scale revisions have been made.
